ABOUT THE COIN
The Marine Corps’ emblem contains an eagle, globe, and an anchor. The design’s inspiration goes back to the early Continental Marines and the United Kingdom’s Royal Marines. The emblem became the official symbol of the Marine Corps in 1955, by President Eisenhower. The emblem consists of a “fouled anchor,” that is entangled in its own rope. The anchor is going through the globe to represent the important presence of the Marine Corps and how it “anchors” the world. The eagle has always been used as a symbol of power, since it’s at the top of the birds of prey list (nothing preys on the eagle). This particular eagle stands on the top of the Western Hemisphere, on the globe, with wings outspread. A small banner is represented above the eagle with the Latin motto, Semper fidelis, which carries the meaning of “always faithful.”
-Obverse: Marine Corp emblem of eagle, globe, anchor. Around the emblem, the United States Marine Corps is written in a large font. The silver round’s rim displays a nicely braided rope, unlike the one tied to the anchor.
-Reverse: The back of the silver round contains space for future engraving if need be.
